EXCITATION CONTROL / GENERATOR

Ex Excitation Control System

Ex2100e is an excitation control platform for new and retrofit gas, steam and hydro generator applications. It acquires generator electrical measurements, performs automatic voltage regulation, limiting and protection, and controls the power conversion stage that supplies regulated DC to the rotor field circuit.

System Role

By regulating generator field current, the excitation system influences terminal voltage, reactive power and power factor while coordinating with synchronizing, generator protection, turbine control and static starting systems. Retrofit scope requires review of the installed excitation method, power bridges, redundancy, I/O, PPT and power supplies, and field interfaces.

SYSTEM OVERVIEW

Functions and
Upgrade Scope

01

Automatic Voltage Regulation

Regulates excitation output from generator voltage, current and operating mode, with support for reactive power and power factor control.

02

Limiters and Protection

Brings excitation limiters, protection, status monitoring and fault diagnostics into a common control environment.

03

Power Conversion

Uses regulator or static excitation bridge configurations selected for generator capacity and excitation method to provide controlled field output.

04

System Integration

Can integrate with Mark VIe, static starting, HMI, historian and plant control systems in a shared data and operating environment.

SYSTEM CONTEXT

Functional Structure and Interface Boundaries

01

Generator Measurements

Voltage, current, frequency and operating-state inputs provide feedback for regulation, limiting and protection algorithms.

02

Regulator

Automatic and manual regulation, PSS, limiters and protection functions execute on the digital control platform.

03

Power Bridge

IGBT regulators or thyristor static excitation bridges convert the input supply into controlled excitation output.

04

Field Circuit

Controlled DC acts on the rotating exciter or generator rotor field to establish the required terminal voltage and reactive operating state.

05

Control and Monitoring

Status, commands, alarms and diagnostics are exchanged with Mark VIe, synchronizing, protection, HMI and historian systems.

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE

Technical Highlights

Applications

Ex2100e supports new and retrofit excitation systems for gas, steam and hydro generators.

Regulator and Static Excitation

Automatic voltage regulators may serve lower field-current applications, while higher-current applications may use thyristor static excitation systems.

Redundancy Options

Systems may use simplex or redundant controls with warm-standby, N-1 or N-2 power bridge arrangements selected for capacity and availability requirements.

Integrated Software Environment

The ControlST suite includes ToolboxST, WorkstationST and CIMPLICITY for configuration, diagnostics, HMI and historian functions.

System Integration

Integration with Mark VIe, Ls2100e, DCS and HMI can reduce additional gateways; standalone retrofits can also use Modbus/TCP or hardwired interfaces.

Digital Front End Retrofit

A DFE path may retain suitable installed power conversion equipment after engineering review, reducing retrofit scope and outage impact.
